This is a pitch video I made explaining the WeaveGrid driver experience to potential automaker partners. It covers how drivers find and sign up for a utility program, setting up, daily use, messaging for grid emergencies, and metrics. I made the storyboard, wrote the script, recorded my colleague, engineered the audio, made and animated all the visuals, and did the subtitling.
Background
What is the product?
This is a co-branded dashboard for drivers who participate in a WeaveGrid charging program through their utility to manage their car’s automatic charge settings and see charging data, statistics, and history for their vehicle. It’s a website (with a variation for each utility customer – 15+ sites) optimized for desktop and mobile.
Who are the users?
Mainly EV early adopters – we have a range of tech savvy from “I don’t speak kWh and don’t ever want to” to “I noticed WeaveGrid pinging my car and causing 1% battery drain”. Most drivers charge mainly at home and rarely need to use their full range for their daily activities. They are influenced partly by the modest monetary incentives and partially by the desire to charge off-peak and be a responsible user of the grid.
What are the user’s goals?
That said, a driver usually goes to the dashboard for a few reasons:
We aim to be a very low-touch interface for the drivers. The ideal experience is after they get set up, they never have to think about charging their car again. They just plug in when they get home and the car charges at their lowest cost times while respecting utility grid signals with no driver interaction.
- Change or troubleshoot their automatic smart charge settings
- Look up how much money they spent on EV charging
- Troubleshoot their program enrollment status
- Download charge history for business tax records
Sign up flow
I worked on optimizing the sign up flow to reduce steps and drop-off for drivers, while taking into considering technical limitations, shifting APIs from automakers, and wait times with the utility for enrollment.
